Sustainability & Ethics

At Lazy Cat Closet, all our clothing is made in Canada in small batches from sustainable fabrics. Below are sustainability and ethics statements from the lines we carry.

Brenda Laine Designs

Brenda Laine Design's Sustainability & Ethics Statement:

Brenda Laine Designs' sustainable fashion line for women represents years of refinement and care. All garments are created, sampled and refined by me. I work closely with a small manufacturing team in Vancouver, BC, Canada, who grade my patterns carefully to create a perfect fit for sizes Small to Plus. They then cut and sew the garments, ship them back to me for final inspection, maintaining a consistency of quality and care between my hands and their hands, to yours.
All fabrics used to manufacture Brenda Laine Designs are supplied by Canadian companies who produce functional textiles that are environmentally and socially responsible. The fabrics are produced in mills which meet the highest standards required for global and international certification.
All fabrics come with certification:GOTS: Global Organic Textile Certification, or OEKO-TEX®Standard 100OEKO-TEX®Standard 100 is a certification process that tests for harmful substances used during all stages of production (raw materials, intermediate, and end product). This includes testing for illegal substances, legally regulated substances, known harmful (but not legally regulated) chemicals, and other parameters for health care. It provides manufacturers with a uniform benchmark when evaluating harmful substances potentially used in the production process.
Environmentally conscious manufacturers produce fabrics that are tested for safety and skin-friendly.

Eco-Friendly and Ethical Clothing | Made in Canada | Meemoza
Meemoza Sustainability Statement

Sustainability is more than ever a part of our modern era. Here is concretely how we put sustainability at the core of our creative process.

Since the beginning, we believe in a concious approach to fashion, which originates from our desire to limit our impact on the environment. To do so, we prioritize three types of fabrics :

  1. New sustainable fabrics and/or certified organic (Tencel, Org. Cotton)
  2. New natural fabrics, that do not require the use of pesticides (Linen, Wool)
  3. Reclaimed deadstock fabrics from fashion houses that over-ordered
Lumia Sustainability Statement
We believe that living with our environment is the best way to obtain optimal health and daily mindfulness. To properly honour this, we take various steps to ensure sustainable business practices to actively reduce our carbon footprint in anyway that we can.

For starters, all our herbal ingredients are sourced from local, organic farms within British Columbia, Canada. We also ensure that our carrier oils and essential oils are sourced within Canada, specifically being purchased from the reputable New Directions Aromatics based out of Ontario, Canada.

Furthermore, we choose to use glass jars and bottles for product packaging as glass materials are more likely to be reused and recycled by the public. Notably, we do not have additional boxes or plastic shrink wraps for lids all in the name of helping the environment.

To encourage reuse of our bottles and jars, all glass containers are dishwasher safe and our labels are removable. Last but not least, we proudly reuse all packaging material we receive from our fellow wholesalers and distributors in the hopes that they will do the same.
"Hi, I'm Aly, I am the heart and soul behind of New Genes Maternity Wear. From heartache to passion from losing my daughter almost 8 years ago, I have made it my mission to make every mom feel beautiful, even if it was just for a moment in her day. Growing a human is hard. Parenting is hard; finding quality, versatile clothing at a reasonable price shouldn't be. I try and design and sew clothes that can be worn into your 4th trimester. Designed with a women’s every-changing body in mind, these styles can be worn from the office to play dates These handmade items are ethically made and designed with a little humour and a lot of love. Our philosophy is “A woman's body is changing but her lifestyle doesn’t have to”"

At Fern & Petal, we bottle all of our essential oils locally in Vancouver, BC. All of our products use all-natural ingredients, meaning there are no dyes, no fragrances and no synthetic preservatives in any product.

We care about nature and our communities; thats why with every purchase, we donate $1 to plant a tree. Working together, Fern & Petal wants to help improve the world for everyone.

At Margaret M, we value contributing to the development of our country. That’s part of the reason we’ve decided to make all our products here in Canada. We also feel better knowing that our pieces meet all Canadian healthy and safety standards; that our slimming pants have travelled less and have made a smaller carbon footprint, and that the people who manufacture our clothes are well-treated and enjoy good work conditions.

We proudly produce our garments in Canada and do our part in supporting the North American economy.

Birds of North America

Birds began in a tiny live/work studio in Victoria, BC, in 2007 before Hayley and her partner, Neil, moved to Montreal in 2008 in order to have better access to suppliers and clothing manufacturing. They connected with an incredible team of cutters and sewers in the historic garment district of Chabanel with whom they continue to work to this day. Since the brand’s inception, every item of Birds' clothing has been proudly and ethically made in Canada.

In 2015, the Birds studio moved to the Junction Triangle in Toronto where all of the design, pattern making, grading, marker making and stock processing takes place. Their original team in Montreal still cuts and sews all of their clothing.

Birds of North America also offers their "Re Nesting" Program

To facilitate a more circular and sustainable life for each of the pieces we produce, we've created a repurchasing program at Birds! If you have any Birds styles - recent or vintage, worn or unworn, damaged or pristine - we will welcome them back from you in exchange for a small credit towards a future purchase!

Two of the things we've come to realize about Birds pieces over the years are

1. they usually last a very long time

2. they are often much-loved and can be hard to part with when you don't know where they're going!

We hope our ReNesting program will be a solution for you! Anything you bring back to us will be entered into our ReNesting program where it will be directed into one of the following channels:

‘ReNesting’ section

This avenue is for items that are in re-sellable condition. They will be laundered, photographed, repaired, and listed for resale on our website in the ‘ReNests’ section so they can find loving new homes! A portion of each sale with be donated to the Toronto Wildlife Centre. Since launching the ReNesting Program in March of 2021, we have donated a total of $1358.40!

This channel is for items that are too severely degraded or damaged to be resold. We'll either salvage fabric and trimmings from these items to included in our scrap bundles, or donate these pieces to various local charities who raise money through the sale of recycled textiles.
