Sustainability & Ethics

At Lazy Cat Closet, all our clothing is made in Canada in small batches from sustainable fabrics. Below are sustainability and ethics statements from the lines we carry.

Brenda Laine Designs' sustainable fashion line for women represents years of refinement and care. All garments are created, sampled and refined by me. I work closely with a small manufacturing team in Vancouver, BC, Canada, who grade my patterns carefully to create a perfect fit for sizes Small to Plus. They then cut and sew the garments, ship them back to me for final inspection, maintaining a consistency of quality and care between my hands and their hands, to yours.

All fabrics used to manufacture Brenda Laine Designs are supplied by Canadian companies who produce functional textiles that are environmentally and socially responsible. The fabrics are produced in mills which meet the highest standards required for global and international certification.
All fabrics come with certification: GOTS: Global Organic Textile Certification, or OEKO-TEX®Standard 100OEKO-TEX®Standard 100 is a certification process that tests for harmful substances used during all stages of production (raw materials, intermediate, and end product). This includes testing for illegal substances, legally regulated substances, known harmful (but not legally regulated) chemicals, and other parameters for health care. It provides manufacturers with a uniform benchmark when evaluating harmful substances potentially used in the production process.
Environmentally conscious manufacturers produce fabrics that are tested for safety and skin-friendly.

"Good Juju Body & Home is a women-led, BIPOC, Canadian brand that makes premium zero-waste beauty and home care products. Co-founders Alexa and Lisa started Good Juju after spending our careers in the natural health industry, and everything we make is informed by our motto, Zero Waste with Zero Compromise. We were named one of Fast Company “Brands that Matter” for 2022 and we are a 1% for the Planet member. Through product formulation and diverse, representative imagery, we are making zero waste an inclusionary movement. We are an Earth First company on a mission to prevent 50 million plastic bottles from ever being made by 2030. We'd love your help getting there!"

"In the early 1980s, my mother delved into the wholesale jewelry business, immersing my sister Grace and me in a world filled with beads, chains, rhinestones, and crystals. Gracie Rose emerged from our determination to confidently stamp our name on the handmade jewelry crafted by our family in Vancouver, Canada—long before the world recognized the value of "handmade." We're pleased to witness the shift in times! Gracie Rose bears the namesake of my sister and me, Rosy, and the helm of the company is steered by both my mother and me.

With over 40 years of solid footing in the North American fashion domain, our family-run enterprise prides itself on no-nonsense affordability, unwavering quality, and enduring designs. Every piece is meticulously crafted with love, drawing inspiration from the serenity of the Pacific Northwest."

"I had a spontaneous idea to start a t-shirt company, with one eco-friendly fabric and one colour. Simple, but I was definitely in over my head. My main thinking was if I change just the fabric of the most commonly worn article of clothing, the t-shirt, to an organic -eco-friendly, sustainably made fabric, what sort of impact could that have on the fashion industries overall impact. How often do we buy new tees? What do we do with your old ones? The old ones most likely end up in landfills in third and fourth world countries. First world garbage becomes third world problems. Those synthetics are not biodegrading nicely! They are polluting the ground soil and water with all kinds of chemicals. Aiming to be a zero-waste company is a must. I am hoping to inspire others to find ways to make their own business and overall life choices more eco-friendly while still doing what they love. We can all lesson our individual carbon footprint. Recycle, reduce, reuse, rescue your pets, being kind is so cool, science is real, Live, Laugh, Love & Peace!"

"With a degree in design and a passion for fashion, I decided to fulfil my dream of owning my own business and launched Beautiful Boundaries just over 5 years ago! My free-spirited style is trendy, minimalistic and bohemian. The fabrics that I use are unique and colourful to help create a feel-good, refreshing and upbeat vibe. All of my handmade scarves, hats, headbands, earrings and bracelets are ethically conscious and being a vegetarian myself I do my best to avoid any animal products. I love layering different pieces to create that perfect look. “Nothing makes a woman more beautiful than the belief that she is beautiful without boundaries.” "

"No factory made clothing here. All tangente garments are designed and made in my Ottawa (Ontario) studio. I have a small team from Ottawa and Gatineau that help me sew up a storm. Check out my Instagram for some behind the scenes.

Certification: Some of our fabrics are Oeko-Tex certified. This certification ensures there are no harmful chemicals in the fabric. Another certification you want to look for is LENZING™ ECOVERO™. The viscose fibers are derived from sustainable wood and pulp, coming from certified and controlled sources. The viscose fibers generate up to 50% lower emissions and water impact compared to generic viscose.

Fabric: Did you know that all our fabric scraps gets repurposed? Crafty people often want our leftover fabric pieces to use for a variety of projects. Some projects have included pet beds for the local shelter, yoga bolsters and stuffing a very large bean bag. This saves a lot of fabric from going to the landfill.

Pattern: All our patterns are made out of blank newsprint paper that is easily recyclable. When we make a new style, we use A LOT of paper.

Packaging: We now ship all our orders in compostable mailers. To compost, remove the tape and paper address label. You also have the choice of choosing minimal packaging at checkout. By doing so, we’ll forgo the tissue paper, tags and business card. We’ll also ship your order in a compostable mailer"
